Hunting Sword
Dated: circa 1740–50
Culture: German (possibly Munich)
Ivory grip attributed to Joseph Deutschmann (1717–1787)
Medium: steel, silver-gilt, ivory, leather
Measurements: L. 29 1/2 in. (74.9 cm)
Similar sword grips of ivory, carved with fanciful Rococo ornament of shells and waves and attributed to Deutschmann, are recorded as being in the prince-elector of Bavaria’s armory in the 1740s.
